But after years of infinity pools and room service and cabana boys on the island archipelago, this summer my wife and I decided that our next Hawaiian adventure with the kids had to be something different.

“Relaxing” isn’t a word this father of two would use to describe a family vacation at Disneyland.

Sure, a few days with my girls at “the happiest place on Earth” can make them happy (most of the time). And, yes, there are moments—rare moments—when my wife and I can kick back and enjoy a moment of solitude (before we face-plant into our pillows at night).

Most of the time, however, I liken visiting California’s most famous theme park to playing a hard-fought game of football: Do it right and you feel it in your bones, an ache that satisfies.

How am I supposed to fill up my time on a cruise ship? That’s typically one of the first questions most people first ask when thinking about their first cruise. As a relatively independent traveler, it was also my first question.  So for those new to the cruising experience, this can serve as a guide from the highlights of my cruise last week to Alaska on Norwegian Jewel.
